London Marathon Fund Raising Progress -
Last Updated 11/05/2005
If you have run an event recently, such as the Flora
London Marathon or the BUPA Great North Run, then you will have noticed how many
people are now running for charity. It is not just in the big races either. Most
of them now have official charities, in some cases five or six at a time. On
some occasions, it’s virtually impossible to get a place without running for a
charity.
The London Marathon has been at the forefront of
developments in charity running for many years and, of late, many other races
all over the country have replicated its model.
Race Director David Bedford said: “Running for charity
is now a key aspect of the world’s biggest marathon. It’s not only the
runners themselves who add colour and excitement to the day, it’s the charity
support teams themselves who do so much to make the day as successful as it is.
The Flora London Marathon is the single biggest annual
fundraising event nationwide and in 2003 raised £31.8 million for good causes.
Len, Ed & Ross are all running for charity.
-
Len achieved a place through the official
ballot and has chosen to run for
Asthma UK.
-
Ed applied for a place through the official
ballot but as is the case with up to 75% of applicants he was unlucky.
However since receiving the bad news Ed has secured a Golden Bond place for
the
British Lung Foundation.
-
Ross also applied for a place through the official
ballot and was again unlucky. Ross has also secured a Golden Bond place
running for the
British & International Sailors' Society.
A Golden Bond place is a guaranteed entry into the
Flora London Marathon. The Golden Bond places offered by charity's require the recipient
to raise a minimum amount of sponsorship for their chosen cause.
