The Local Rowing events are one of the most
popular events during Dartmouth Royal Regatta (especially for the Boggles),
so much so that they are now held over three days. The first day of racing
is held on the Sunday before regatta week with all of the heats taking
place. The second day, the Monday of regatta week, consists of the
semi-finals and usually the final of the Long Distance Whaler race. The
third day of racing is the big one, the Regatta Rowing Finals on Friday
(know as Friday Rowing). There are two classes
of boats used for local rowing and both belong to the Regatta Committee. The
Whalers (actually Yealm Crabbers) were purchased in 19?? to replace the
Royal Navy's rowing whalers which were being de-commissioned and replaced by
non-rowing craft. The "whalers" are used for four and eight oared rowing.
The Blue Boats were also purchased during a period of RN decommissioning.
When the navy decided to dispose of the old gig-like blue boats the Regatta
started a fund raising appeal for new fibreglass boats. These boats are used
for pairs, double and single sculls. With
Dartmouth Regatta being the most significant Boggle event of the year, Local
Rowing must be one of our greatest enjoyments at Regatta. Without local
rowing and the introduction of the new blue boats, The Dartmouth Boggle and
Word Yahtzee Sports Club (amateur) may not be where it is today (usually in
the Pub). Regular Boggle participation in local rowing is well supported
with many crews adopting Boggle related themes and many supporters crying
out the Boggle chant "BOGGLE BOGGLE" from the quay wall.
The Boggles also pride themselves on there choice of crew names......
